Creating Safer Spaces for Play: Tackling Air Pollution in Accra
In collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipality and with support from the Clean Air Fund, GDCI launched the Removing Pollution from Play project in late 2023, with the aim to tackle air pollution in school environments by implementing practical solutions, raising awareness, and empowering communities to advocate for cleaner air. In March 2025, the completed intervention was inaugurated, and the new safe play space now serves over 150 students in Accra.
Investing in Sustainable Mobility: Addis Ababa Launches its First Cycle Lane under the Safe Cycling Program
Under the Non-motorized Transit (NMT) Policy for Addis Ababa, the city has committed to building 100 km of cycle lanes in the next 3 years. As part of the safe Cycling Program, the 3 km Lebu-Jemo cycle corridor was inaugurated as the first step towards this goal.
City officials have launched a number of initiatives to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities by half by 2023. One such initiative is the recently launched Safe Intersections Program (SIP) which will transform ten intersections per year over the next three years, making them safer and more efficient.

On Dec 5th, 2016, GDCI in partnership with 5 city agencies and 3 local academic institutions, unveiled a 6 month interim at LeGare showcasing the principles from the Global Street Design Guide in Action, and taking a first step towards physical changes in the road environment of Addis Ababa that 'Put People First!'
From the drawing board to the living world: Simple lines bring new life to Addis Ababa’s streets
The road to safer streets takes long-term vision, but it also requires smart planning and rapid action to transform dangerous streets today. As part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety in 10 cities in 3 continents, GDCI traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia recently for a series of traffic safety workshops with more than 120 city planning and transportation professionals.
The Global Designing Cities Initiative is pleased to announce that it has selected Addis Ababa as one of its three cities for technical assistance under the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety for 2016.
