Measuring People-Friendly Streets

‘If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it’– Michael Bloomberg, Former Mayor of NYC

For decades, the performance of our streets has been measured using metrics that focus on improving safety and throughput for vehicles. But that’s finally changing–cities and organizations around the world have developed new metrics and tools to measure streets based on how they perform for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders. These free online tools can help you to build support for people-friendly streets in your city.

In this webinar, Fabrizio Prati, Program manager at NACTO-GDCI, shared key metrics for measuring pedestrian road safety. You can see Fabrizio’s presentation here.

Jennifer Gardner shared Gehl Institute’s methodology for measuring public space, her presentation can be viewed here.

ITDP’s Joe Chestnut also introduced us to their latest walkability tool, you can see Joe’s presentation here.
