As coastal cities grow and their economies change, waterfronts are gradually transforming from mostly uninhabited, vast, industrialized areas into destinations and mobility hubs for locals and visitors alike. Toronto, Canada, and Auckland, New Zealand, are two of the leading cities around the world in transforming their waterfront streets.
In this edition of our webinar series, we heard from Pina Mallozzi, Vice President of Design at Waterfront Toronto, about her work on the revitalization of Queens Quay and other high profile projects along Toronto’s waterfronts. We also watched a video presentation by Panuku Development Auckland, the council-controlled organization that delivers urban regeneration in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland).
Skye Duncan, Director of the Global Designing Cities Initiative at NACTO, moderated the discussion and took questions from attendees for presenters to address at the end of the session.

Pina Mallozzi BLA, MLA
Pina Mallozzi is the Vice President, Design at Waterfront Toronto. She is responsible for the planning and design of a large portfolio of projects which includes the revitalization of Queens Quay, the PortxLands Flood Protection, the Gardiner East EA and Public Realm Plan and other parks and public spaces emerging on the waterfront. She has worked closely with consultant teams and community stakeholders for over thirteen years in order to ensure that Waterfront Toronto’s vision for vibrant, well-designed communities and public spaces is realized. She is a Landscape Architect with a Masters of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University.
Panuku Development Auckland
Panuku Development Auckland is the council-controlled organization that delivers urban regeneration in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). Panuku works in locations where the council land can be developed to build on the existing vitality of a neighborhood.
Panuku’s team is made up of Property Managers, Project Managers, Development Managers, Urban Designers, Architects, and Landscape Architects, Placemakers, and Communications and Engagement Specialists who all play a vital role in delivering their purpose – shaping spaces for Aucklanders to love.
The Waterfront was the first of Panuku’s locations, where they manage around 45 hectares of waterfront property on behalf of Auckland Council. Wynyard Quarter, one of the Waterfront’s neighborhoods, is being transformed as part of one of New Zealand’s largest regeneration projects spanning 30 years. Investment in the Waterfront streets has enabled Panuku to optimize the development and management of waterfront assets to generate long-term sustainable, commercial returns.
