School Street Programs at Scale: The Journeys of Rio de Janeiro and Cuenca
Following their participation in the 2025 Streets for Kids Leadership Accelerator, GDCI selected Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Cuenca, Ecuador, to receive dedicated technical assistance. Over the course of a year, GDCI worked alongside local teams to refine, strengthen, and scale the impact of their school streets initiatives. The road to safer streets takes long-term vision, but it also requires smart planning and rapid action to transform dangerous streets today. As part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety in 10 cities in 3 continents, GDCI traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia recently for a series of traffic safety workshops with more than 120 city planning and transportation professionals.
